I am not generally anti-war. Nor am I against our efforts in Iraq. I've gone on record in the paper of record on this issue.
Yet today I have reached a point, after seeing yet another good guy have his life threatened, that I cannot feel anything but a profound sadness over the continuing situation. I fear a greater horror is yet to come before the so-called "independence."
I feel extremely sorry for the young men and women "over there." Unlike World War II, in which many more of our nation's men were engaged in the fighting, our all-volunteer army is all too aware of the millions back home with little investment, personally or otherwise, in the conflict to give a damn or to even support them in their efforts. That's why Michael Moore's cynical manipulation of this whole affair is so revolting to me. All he cares about is toppling the current administration, which he makes no bones about.
I am currently reading C.S. Lewis's
The Problem of Pain, a classic. The premise is simple, the explanation complex and learned: "If God is good and all-powerful, why does he allow his creatures to suffer pain?" I'm not going to paraphrase Lewis or even relate what Lewis is after because it's irrelevant. Pain is what is on my mind lately, as are the images of hoistages threatening to be beheaded. In contrast to the violence, and in direct contradiction to the thought of God's presence, I recall the lyrics to the movie
M*A*S*H, and their inherent cynicism:
"Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please."
I pray that our soldiers don't fall down into such despair or believe that Michael Moore is representative of our nation's viewpoint. Life is God's greatest gift, and our fight is a benevolent one. We are improving the lives of those people over there. We give a damn about them and America gives a damn about you. Hang in there and be careful. Suicide or any casualty is not painless for those of us left behind.
